Abstract: Voice over IP (VOIP) uses the Internet Protocol (IP) to transmit voice as packets over an IP network. So VOIP can be achieved on any data network that uses IP, like Internet, Intranets and Local Area Networks (LAN). Here the voice signal is digitized, compressed and converted to IP packets and then transmitted over the IP network. Signaling protocols are used to set up and tear down calls, carry information required to locate users and negotiate capabilities. VoIP is an advanced technology that has a great potential to develop new telecommunication with much lower cost and better QoS. In our project, we shall analyze the performance of VoIP over digital communication on popular application such as Skype and msn. Parameters of interest are the quality of service, the Mean Opinion Score, packet loss ratio and jitter. We also plan to examine the delays and distortion issues that VoIP might have while increasing the traffic load and generate a more realistic topology by adding extra models to the system and evaluate the impact to the overall QoS.
