Perpetuation of Mumbai ports

Abstract

The Mumbai Ports and its adjoining areas, which date back to the 16th century, have played a vital role in shaping the city’s fabric through colonial architecture, rapid transit de- velopment, and extravagant lifestyle. Mumbai ports, because of being so secluded have broken the link of historical relics with the contemporary city. To be specific, Princess Dock and Bhaucha Dhakka is one of the earliest reasons for molding the city, which is on the verge of redevelopment into a leisure space that adversely affects the existing fabric of Princess Dock. Princess Dock and Bhaucha Dhakka are one of the prominent examples towards the current architecture, economic, and lifestyle of the city which uplifts its historic sentiment along with the current underutilized zones to be connected within the city. The proposal intervened with the existing fabric of Bhaucha Dhakka and also avoids the current fabric of the vicinity indirectly merging into faded clusters. Princess Dock and Bhaucha Dhakka are the focus of the research to reduce the adverse impact on existing fabric because of the approved proposal by the MBPT. While the research also aims to revitalize the emergence of Mumbai and preserve it using architecture as a solution for upcoming generations. Besides the dock areas, the research also examines its users, proposed urban development, and its history.
