The dictionary meaning of the term ‘environment’ is a ‘surrounding’. It is derived from the English word ‘environ’ which means ‘to surround’ or to ‘encircle’. What constitute a surrounding? It is not very easy to Comprehend this term. It encompasses all external conditions influencing development or growth of people, animal, and/or plants. The external conditions are quite profound in the context of ‘environmentalism’. The basis for ‘environmentalism’ is the belief that environment rather than heredity is the main influence on a person’s behaviour and growth. It is a thought process which concerns about the environment and its protection from the adverse effects of all kinds of pollution and other human activities. Darwin’s Theory of evolution leading to the situation of the survival of the fittest is perhaps the best example of the environmentalism (Darwin 1859)en_US
