Abstract:
The growth of economy of any country depends upon the development of
transportation. In country like India, having second largest system of railways in the world
and fully developed highway transportation, there is growing demand for air transportation.
Demands for larger capacity and more facilities at the airports are increasing at a faster rate.
The increased number of airlines and their increasing fleet size and flight frequencies has
created competitive domestic services with fare reductions, in spite of zooming oil prices.
Indian airport besides runway capacities are also lacking very much in accommodating new
airline offices and their demands for handling passengers. Present growth rate places Indian
airports among the fastest growing in the world, next to China.
We took up this project of Airport Pavement Design by keeping in mind the growth
rate of Air traffic and Air passengers in India. We aim at understanding how exactly does the
huge load of aero planes is transferred to the pavement and the sub grade below. We started
our work by carrying out literature review in this regard.
